A Guide to Cat and Dog Vaccines

 Dog Vaccines - Dog Vaccination Schedule

Core Vaccines

Rabies: Can be given starting at 3 months.

  • Single dose
  • State regulate initial dose age
  • Boosters every 1-3 years, depending on vaccine type.

 

Distemper / Parvovirus / Adenovirus: For Puppies 3 doses between 6-16 weeks of age.

  • Booster for puppies at 1 year, then for all dogs every 3 years
  • For dogs over 16 weeks, 2 doses 3-4 week apart

 

Parainfluenza: For Puppies 1 dose at 6-8 weeks, then 1 dose every 3-4 weeks until 12-14 weeks of age.

  • Revaccination every 3 years
  • For dogs 1 dose

 

Non-Core Vaccines

Lyme Disease: For Puppies 1 dose at 9 weeks or later, 2nd dose 2-4 weeks later.

  • Booster annually at start of tick season
  • For dogs 2 doses, 2-4 weeks apart

 

Other Non-Core Options

  • Leptospirosis
  • Canine influenza
  • Bordetella

 

Cat Vaccines - Cat Vaccination Schedule

Core Vaccines
Rabies: For Kittens single dose as soon as 12-16 weeks of age, revaccination after 1 year, yearly after.
  • For all cats non-adjuvanted vaccines
  • Boosters every 1-3 years, depending on vaccine type
Distemper / Panleukopenia / Calicivirus / Rhinotracheitis virus: For Kittens as soon as 6 weeks, then every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age.
  • Booster 1 year after 1st vaccine, then every 3 years
  • For cats 2 doses 2-4 weeks apart
Non-Core Vaccines

 

Feline leukemia virus vaccine: For Kittens as soon as 12 weeks, then 3-4 weeks later.

  • Booster given annually
  • For cats 2 doses 2-4 weeks apart

 

Travel and Pets


  • Make sure vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling with or boarding your pet.
  • Get a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within 10 days of departure.
