Dog Beds. Choose the Right Bed for your Lovely Dog.

When pet owners ask what items they need to purchase for their pet, a good dog bed is always at the top of the list - along with a collar, leash, and food and water dishes. Just as every puppy should have a cage, we feel that every dog should have a bed. Like cages, beds offer your dog the sense of security of having a place of her own - a place to get away when she is tired or just needs quiet time by herself. It also provides him with insulation from a cold, hard floor, and cushioned support for joints and bones. Dog beds are so important that they aren't considered optional; but are, instead, a necessary piece of equipment for all dogs regardless of size, breed, or age. Your furry family member needs a warm, comfortable bed for the same reasons you do. Dog beds serve a practical purpose for dog owners, too. They help keep your canine off your sofa and bed, and help contain pet hair and dander in one place.

6 Benefits of a Dog Bed

  1. Insulating your dog
  2. Providing your dog
  3. Cushioning
  4. Controlling the spread of hair and dander
  5. Helping to prevent injuries
  6. Protecting your outside dog

Types of Dog Beds

  1. Standard dog beds

Standard dog beds look like cushions or pillows and do not have edges or rims. They are available in many shapes, sizes, materials and colors. Standard dog beds range in quality from basic economy to expensive designer versions. Many have removable, washable covers.

  1. Nest dog beds

Nest dog beds are very similar to standard dog beds, except they have raised edges. The rims or bolsters on these beds may surround the entire bed or only a portion of the bed.

  1. Outdoor Dog Beds

These beds provide less cushioning, but they are waterproof and more durable. As such, they can be used both indoors and outdoors. They are much cooler than soft beds. This is especially true of the elevated beds, that are lifted off the floor by a steel frame.

  1. Soft & Donut Dog Beds

These beds are typically round or oval and made of very soft materials. Donut dog beds are extremely plush and some of the most cuddly dogs beds available. Dogs love them! Donut beds are great for dogs that like to curl up and get cozy.

  1. Orthopedic beds

Orthopedic beds are designed especially for dogs with arthritis or other orthopedic problems. Made with high quality thick foam, these beds provide extra support for your dog's body and put less stress on joints.

  1. Covered or hooded dog beds

Covered or hooded dog beds are yet another way for dogs to snuggle up. With the appearance of small houses or tents, these beds provide a small plush retreat for dogs. A covered dog beds is cute and unique way to give your dog a special place.

  1. Heated dog beds

Heated dog beds give your dog an extra-warm place. When combined with orthopedic features, heated beds can be highly therapeutic for dogs with achy joints. These beds work like heating pads or electric blankets.

  1. Cooling dog beds

Some dogs, especially breeds with long fur or breeds with double coats, can easily overheat in the summer. When the temperature is high, these dogs may have trouble sleeping, and may even get heatstroke if not properly managed.

There are two general classes of cool dog beds.

  • Water beds – Most water beds need to be filled with water, need to be cleaned regularly, and may spring a leak after some use.
  • Gel beds – Gel beds come ready with cooling gel, which make them more convenient, and easy to use. However, gel beds may not cool, as well as the water-filled beds.

The last and most important thing when you choose a Dog Bed

A good dog bed is not a luxury. It's an essential piece of equipment. So take the time to find the right one. Make sure the bed is big enough. If he's stretched out to his maximum, the bed should be large enough to support his entire body. Try measuring your dog and then add five inches to ensure a comfortable fit.
